President Ross called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
The Pledge was led by Mike Torr.
Brendan gave an invocation.
Daniela led us in the Four Way Test.
Ross led us in a singing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."
Herman forgot it was his turn for a joke, so Daniela covered for him with a Michael Jackson joke.
Visiting Rotarians: None
Guests of Rotarians: Bob Burdo, Trustee Santa Rosa Junior College
Correspondence: Food For Humans invited us as one of their sponsors to their breakfast in Forestville on 10/18.
The SRJC financial aid department sent us two thank you letters from the students selected for the Russian River Rotary JC scholarship.
Announcements: Crab Feed event has been created on Facebook. Please "share" with your friends.
Mike Nicholls will be heading up the rural broadband effort. He'll be travelling to Washington DC to meet with the FCC, and our state legislators.
Herman G. has been selected to be in charge of the Parade of Lights on December 6th. 13-17 year old candidates for Prince/Princesses are needed.
Ed made a 2nd appeal for donations to help firefighters who lost their homes in the recent fires.
Ross has a temporary gavel on loan from Andy until his official gavel's captor feels the time is right for a fat ransom.
The fireside chat at Ross's went well. Our new members were given an overview of Rotary and a sense of the goals we set for ourselves.
Board Meeting: The selection process for the grant program was discussed, but no action taken at this time. We just received our first application from the Cazadero Garden.
Treasurer report: Some dinners are not getting paid. Andy will start giving tickets to those who paid; tickets will be dropped in a cup at the buffet to help track how many dinners were sold.
Current funds: Foundation account: $25,428.14, Club account: $6,708.24.
Discussion of dues: Sebastopol clubs have higher annual dues, but lower fine expectations. Our status quo will do for now.
Membership committee created. Jeff will chair, includes Donna, and all new members. Remember to greet club guests and make them feel welcome!
Dinner to honor Roscoe and Rich. Date to be confirmed.
RI Foundation meeting will be on 11/4 or 11/18. Knud will chair as Foundation chairperson. We will need up-to-date contribution reports.
International: No sign of Go Big Ghana. We will sponsor Global Student Embassy for their work in Central America, but they will have to visit us again and give us an update on their program.
Club activities: Awards dinner 10/28.
Next SCARC dinner 10/20. Ross will pass around a flyer.
Next social evening TBD, maybe at Betty's Spaghetti at RRR.
Culinary dinner now overbooked at 46! 12 Rotarians, Elmo Foundation, Boosters will be in attendance. Over the years we've raised approximately $35,000 for the Culinary Program!
Applewood dinner 11/13. $150 approved unanimously to have Chavez Winery supply and pour for the tasting. We've raised almost $10K over the past few years doing the Applewood Dinner. This year the proceeds will again go to providing 3 scholarships to El Molino Culinary students. Dinner tickets are $55. Ed will come up with some gag gifts for each table.
Crab Feed. Hoping to sell out by 12/3. Almost 80 sold already.
District Governor's visit 10/21. We will have a board meeting with DG Kevin Eisenberg at 4:00 p.m.. The theme is "What brings pride & joy to our club?"
Ed requested a $1,000 donation from the foundation for relief for fire fighters. To be funneled through Weed Rotary if they are collecting, otherwise the Firefighters Benevolent Fund. Approved unanimously.
Discussion regarding the appropriateness of having speakers in favor of propositions. Currently we don't endorse candidates or have them speak in the run up to elections. No policy adopted, but we will try to keep a balance of pro/con speakers.
Happy Bucks: Lori gave $5 in celebration of her daughters 21st birthday (Hans too?)
Fines: Ross asked us to raise our hands if we were happy to be there. Apparently Herman was the lone holdout. He was fined $10, everyone else $5 for being happy! Even Bob Burdo contributed as a guest. Herman was fined another $15 for his 3 appearances in the paper over as many weeks. He told us about the most recent Los Cien breakfast at the Flamingo for approximately 400 people. He rounded his fine up to $20! Andy was fined $5 in honor of his club induction anniversary, then got dinged another $2 for not having his badge on (or putting it away early). Finally Donna was fined $5 for her birthday! $106 of an expected $107 was collected.
Raffle: Herman drew the winning ticket, but just missed cash winnings by drawing the Jack of Hearts.
Program: Herman J. introduced Ricardo Navarrette, VP for Student Affairs at Santa Rosa Junior College. SRJC was founded in 1918 and the 100 year anniversary is approaching. 51% of high school graduates in Sonoma County make the JC their next stop. This has been helped by the Doyle Scholarship, the largest educational endowment ever gifted. Ricardo spoke to us about the upcoming ballot measure to raise a bond for facility improvements at the JC. He gave an overview of what work needed to be done on campus and then took questions from the audience.
Thought for the Day: Hans reminded us that if you're not the lead dog in the pack, the view never changes!
